Justice for Cwecwe Protests Intensify as Calls for Accountability Grow

The nationwide Justice for Cwecwe protests continue to gain momentum as South Africans demand justice for a 7-year-old child who was allegedly sexually assaulted on school premises in the Eastern Cape in October last year.
The case gained national attention after AfriForum provided legal representation for one of the suspects—the principal of the school where the alleged assault took place. Reports indicate that while the school transport driver and caretaker cooperated with police by providing DNA samples, the principal initially refused to submit his DNA for testing, further fueling public outrage.
In multiple statements, Berg View College has insisted that there is no evidence proving the assault took place on school grounds, a claim that has been backed by AfriForum. The organization defended the principal’s refusal to provide his DNA, arguing that he was within his legal rights.
The family of Cwecwe recently confirmed that they are selling their house and car to fund the ongoing legal battle, prompting a surge of public support. Many South Africans, including celebrities, have rallied behind the family, offering financial and legal assistance. Somizi Mhlongo, a well-known South African celebrity, posted an emotional video urging people to support the cause.
Following the overwhelming public outcry, legal experts worldwide have offered to provide pro bono legal services, demonstrating the power of collective action. It has been recently reported that the principal has now submitted his DNA sample, but advocacy groups and organizations across South Africa are calling on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure that the samples are protected and that the investigation remains transparent.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and protests under the #JusticeForCwecwe movement continue across South Africa, demanding accountability and justice.
Protests Reignite Conversations on GBV Cases
The Justice for Cwecwe protests have also highlighted unresolved cases of gender-based violence (GBV) and empowered survivors to come forward with their own stories.
One such case is that of a 15-year-old pupil who was allegedly raped at a Curro school in Mbombela. Police have since confirmed that a prime suspect is in custody while the investigation is ongoing.
The ongoing protests have become a powerful movement against GBV, urging authorities to prioritize sexual violence cases and ensure that survivors receive justice.
