The Inspiring Journey of Lunga Ngqanda

Lunga Ngqanda, a South African author and filmmaker, embarked on his literary journey during a pivotal moment in his life. In 2018, while still in his matric year, he published his first book, The Silent Dream. This remarkable achievement marked the beginning of Lunga's dedication to storytelling and his desire to share his unique perspective with the world.
Following his success as an author, Lunga transitioned into the world of film and television. He produced movies for Mzansi Magic, including Hatred, and wrote another acclaimed piece titled Qaphela. Demonstrating his versatility and commitment to the craft, Lunga also worked as a Production Coordinator on a National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) funded short film called Raekel's Eighteenth, produced by Umlilo Films.
Lunga's career took another significant step forward when he joined the team at Scandal!, an award-winning soap opera airing on eTV from Monday to Friday. As a writer for the show, Lunga has found immense value in working with experienced scriptwriters. He believes that this collaboration has deepened his understanding of storytelling and the reasons behind why stories are told.
Lunga notes the evolving landscape of television viewership, highlighting the increasing accessibility of international content through various digital platforms. "Years to come, we might end up watching series and films online," he observes, reflecting on the shift in how audiences consume media.
Lunga's journey from the Eastern Cape to Gauteng is a testament to his resilience and determination. Despite the challenges of living in a poor area like Alexandra, he has remained focused on his passion for storytelling. His experiences have shaped his narratives, particularly around themes of family and love. "I chose writing to heal myself and be ready to tell more stories," Lunga shares, revealing the personal motivations behind his work.
Lunga's entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish his production company, Ngqanda Studios. Though still in its early stages, the company has received support from the Gauteng Film Commission, providing the start-up equipment needed to create content for platforms like YouTube and TikTok. Recognizing the shifting audience preferences, Lunga is excited about the potential of reaching a broader audience through these digital channels.
