The Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party has sacked its Chief Whip, Colleen Makhubele. She has been replaced by MP Des van Rooyen.

MK's official statement did not give reasons for Makhubele's dismissal. However, it is said that the decision followed an internal report recommending her suspension.

"The internal report on Colleen recommended that she be suspended pending an investigation. But we already had all the evidence - there was no need to investigate. The facts were there so she must go," the source said.

A statement on Van Rooyen's appointment said: "The MK party is fully confident that under her leadership as Chief Whip, the Parliamentary Caucus will be strengthened, disciplined and aligned with the party's historic mission of delivering full freedom to the people of South Africa." It continued: “The party assures its supporters and the wider community that the new leadership in Parliament will enrich the work of the caucus, sharpen its political focus and increase its capacity to represent the will of the people without compromise.”
