Namibia has officially ended visa-free entry for travelers from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and 31 other countries, a policy shift aimed at promoting diplomatic reciprocity. The changes, which took effect on April 1, 2025, mean that affected travelers must now obtain a visa upon arrival.

The new visa, priced at $90 USD, must be applied for in advance through Namibia’s online visa portal. According to the US Embassy, travelers are advised to plan ahead to avoid any disruptions.

Namibia previously granted visa-free access to 55 nations, but only 18 of those countries offered similar privileges to Namibian passport holders. The policy adjustment reflects a broader trend among African nations striving for equitable international travel agreements.

While there have been unverified claims of 500 US citizens being denied entry and ordered to leave, official sources have not confirmed such reports. However, the policy shift is expected to have an impact on Namibia’s tourism industry, which contributed 7% to the nation’s GDP in 2022.

As the new regulations settle in, travelers and industry stakeholders will be closely watching to see how this change affects tourism, business, and diplomatic relations between Namibia and the affected nations.
