In a major leap toward digital transformation, South African airports are set to introduce a new system that will eliminate the need for physical passports and boarding passes. This innovative approach aims to simplify the travel process and significantly reduce queues and waiting times.

Passengers will soon be able to verify their identity using digital identification methods, which will streamline both security and immigration checks. Boarding passes will also be sent directly to travelers’ mobile devices, removing the need for printed documents.

The system is designed to:

  • Reduce queues and minimize wait times.

  • Enhance security by reducing the risk of identity theft and document fraud.

  • Provide a seamless travel experience through improved efficiency.

The rollout will begin at major hubs like OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and Cape Town International Airport. The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is collaborating with airlines and immigration authorities to ensure a smooth transition to this digital-first model.

Travelers can look forward to a faster, safer, and more convenient airport journey — all from their smartphones.
