Concerns Mount Over R5M Culvert Bridge Unveiled in Phalaborwa

In a recent ceremony that aimed to mark progress and connectivity, Phalaborwa Mayor Mirriam Malatji unveiled a new Culvert bridge connecting Humulani and Majeje villages. However, what was meant to be a celebration has quickly turned into a cause for concern, as the bridge's structure and safety features have raised eyebrows and sparked public outcry.

The bridge, which reportedly cost the municipality roughly R5 million, has come under intense scrutiny for its poor construction and lack of essential safety measures. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has been vocal in its criticism, labeling the bridge "a disaster waiting to happen."

The controversy surrounding the bridge dates back to the early stages of its development. The Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) had expressed reservations regarding the project's scope and specifications. Despite these concerns, the bridge was deemed complete, but with unsatisfactory workmanship, following an oversight visit by MPAC on August 31, 2023.

One of the primary issues highlighted by critics is the bridge's inadequate height, which poses a significant risk of flooding during the rainy season. Additionally, the absence of protective tarring leaves the structure vulnerable to deterioration, potentially compromising its integrity over time.

Furthermore, safety barriers on the bridge have been deemed insufficient, both in terms of height and strength, raising concerns about the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike. There are fears that these inadequacies could lead to accidents, with vehicles at risk of plunging into the river below.

The hasty handover of the bridge by Mayor Malatji without conducting a thorough high-risk assessment has only exacerbated concerns. The decision to proceed with the unveiling despite glaring issues has been met with criticism from various quarters, including opposition parties and concerned residents.

The DA's condemnation of the bridge underscores the need for accountability and transparency in municipal projects. The safety and well-being of communities should always take precedence, especially when public funds are involved.

As questions continue to swirl around the Culvert bridge, calls for an independent investigation into its construction and safety standards are growing louder. Residents and stakeholders alike are demanding answers and assurances that corrective measures will be taken to rectify the shortcomings of this crucial infrastructure project.

In the meantime, the fate of the Culvert bridge remains uncertain, casting a shadow over the municipality's efforts to improve connectivity and infrastructure in the region. Until meaningful action is taken to address the concerns raised, the bridge stands as a stark reminder of the consequences of neglect and oversight in public projects.
