IEC Fires Employee in Leaked Information Case

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has fired an employee found responsible for leaking political party candidate lists online. Chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo confirmed the dismissal in an interview with Newzroom Afrika, following the unauthorized disclosure of candidate information on social media over the weekend.

The leak, which included lists from the African National Congress (ANC) and the newly-formed uMkhonto weSizwe party, angered both political organizations. Mamabolo had previously announced the identification of the culprit during a press briefing on Monday.

An IEC statement suggests the leaked data originated from internal system-generated reports within the commission.
