EFF Leader Julius Malema Vows to Save Drip Footwear from Liquidation
Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has pledged his support for local sneaker brand Drip Footwear, founded by Lekau Sehoana, which is currently facing liquidation. Drip, a proudly South African brand established in 2019, has become a household name in recent years. However, the company recently entered into liquidation following a High Court order in Johannesburg after Wideopen Platform, a company specializing in large-scale advertising, filed an application citing that Drip had failed to settle a R20 million debt for advertising services.
In response to this, Julius Malema has vowed to intervene. The EFF leader stated that he will be meeting with Drip Footwear’s founder, Lekau Sehoana, tomorrow to better understand the details of what transpired and to discuss possible solutions. Malema, known for his strong support of local businesses, said he is committed to doing everything possible to save the company and its workers from the harsh consequences of liquidation.
Malema expressed deep concern for the workers, many of whom have already seen their contracts terminated as a result of the liquidation process. He raised questions as to why no business aid was extended to Drip Footwear, a brand that has contributed significantly to the local economy and created jobs since its inception.
The EFF leader also pledged to personally lead efforts to raise R20 million in funds to assist Drip in settling its debt and avoiding further financial collapse. “I will make the calls necessary to raise the R20 million needed to save Drip Footwear,” Malema vowed, emphasizing the importance of preserving local businesses and safeguarding jobs during these challenging economic times.
Drip Footwear has garnered a loyal following since its launch, celebrated for its unique designs and strong emphasis on African pride. The company's financial troubles have come as a shock to many supporters, and Malema's involvement is likely to ignite a public debate on the role of local business support and the need for stronger measures to protect emerging enterprises.
As the situation develops, all eyes will be on Malema’s meeting with Lekau Sehoana, as well as the EFF leader’s efforts to secure the much-needed financial backing to save one of South Africa’s most beloved footwear brands.
