In a major development in the long-running Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, the Pretoria High Court has ruled that confessions by two accused implicating singer Kelly Khumalo will be admissible as evidence.

Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng delivered the verdict today, following a "trial-within-a-trial" that examined the circumstances surrounding the confessions of Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya and Bongani Ntanzi. Both men had initially confessed to the 2014 murder of Meyiwa, which occurred at the home of his then-girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo.

The crux of the trial-within-a-trial centered on whether the confessions were obtained under duress. Sibiya and Ntanzi had claimed coercion by police. However, Judge Mokgoatlheng ruled that the confessions were made "freely and voluntarily, without any coercion."

This decision paves the way for the confessions to be presented in the main trial. The details of these confessions remain under seal, but according to previous reports, they allege Khumalo's involvement in orchestrating the hit.

Importantly, it is crucial to note that these are just confessions, and Kelly Khumalo has not been charged with any crime. The prosecution has also indicated she is not expected to be called as a witness.

This ruling marks a significant turning point in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, which has gripped South Africa for nearly a decade. The inclusion of these confessions could significantly impact the prosecution's case.
