In a groundbreaking move towards digital transformation, Cameroon has introduced a new identification system for students in secondary and high schools. Known as the National Matricule, this system is set for full implementation. The announcement was made on August 1, 2024, by the Minister of Secondary Education, Professor Pauline Nalova Lyonga, during a media briefing in Douala.

The National Matricule serves as a unique identifier for each student in secondary and high school, revolutionizing student data management by ensuring faster and more secure processes. Professor Nalova Lyonga emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "This digital innovation builds on the mobile money fee payment system introduced six years ago in all secondary school establishments. With the adoption of the National Matricule, operations will be conducted more efficiently—it's a step towards improvement."

The new system is expected to bring widespread benefits to all stakeholders in the educational system. By streamlining the fee collection process, it promises a smoother, smarter experience for operators, while effectively shutting out fraudsters. Moreover, it empowers parents to take direct control of fee payments, reducing operational costs previously incurred by agents.

Ako Joelle Agborndang, a consultant for the Ministry of Secondary Education, elaborated on the system's practical advantages. "For the past six years, students have been required to provide extensive information for every transaction. With this new form of identification, they simply input their matricule, and the system instantly recognizes them. Payments can then be made seamlessly through Express Union, Campost, Mobile Money, and Orange Money," she explained.

This digital innovation is a testament to the Ministry's ongoing commitment to modernization. Building on the earlier digital payment system, the Ministry continues to advance, making the educational experience more streamlined and user-friendly for parents, operators, and the Ministry itself. The platform, cartescolaire.cm, where the unique identifier will be issued, is already operational and will be fully in use for the 2024-2025 academic year.

As Cameroon embraces this digital shift, it underscores a broader commitment to innovation and progress, promising a brighter, more efficient future for the educational sector.
