Five Students Killed and 11 injured in Mpumalanga Bus and Train Crash

In a devastating accident on Wednesday, five learners lost their lives and 11 others sustained injuries when a bus collided with a train in Mpumalanga. The tragic incident occurred on the R104 Road near Mafube Village, between Wonderfontein and Arnot, in the afternoon.
According to a statement from the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the collision involved a bus transporting approximately 30 learners from Morneg School. It is believed that the bus was crossing the railway line when it was struck by the train. The violent impact resulted in the immediate deaths of five young students at the scene. Both the bus and train drivers were also injured in the crash.
The MEC for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, expressed profound shock and sadness at the loss of such young lives. In her statement, she emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the crash and hold those responsible accountable.
"We cannot lose such young and innocent lives due to recklessness," Macie stated. "People need to take accountability for their negligence. Scholar transport and public transport owners must screen drivers before hiring them to know if they are really fit to be trusted with transporting people. They must also regularly educate them, test, and train them to avoid these kinds of incidences."
The tragic accident has sparked renewed calls for improved safety measures in the transportation of school children. The necessity for stringent driver screening processes and ongoing education and training for transport operators has been underscored in light of this incident.

This incident comes just a month after another tragic accident in Carletonville, where 12 learners were killed in a crash. Eleven of the victims were students from Rocklands Primary School, while the twelfth was from Laerskool Blyvooruitsig.
