10 arrested for drunk driving in KZN
More than ten people have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in KwaZulu-Natal over the Easter weekend.
This weekend, road safety in the province was tightened in an effort to prevent horrific accidents that could occur as the roads are congested.
This weekend, most people are on the road for various purposes as some attend their church services while others are on holiday to visit their families.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Mr Siboniso Duma, has called for tougher sentences for drivers caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
Duma’s spokesperson, Mr Ndabezinhle Sibiya, said drivers caught driving under the influence are already in prison and the MEC wants them to be sentenced to six years in prison.
He said this is because they are putting the lives of other drivers at risk and believes that this sentence can serve as a lesson to others who consider driving under the influence.
Sibiya said on Saturday they stopped more than 180 vehicles during a roadblock involving various security agencies in the Empangeni area near Qalakabusha.
He said other drivers were also arrested for violating other traffic laws.
He said six vehicles were impounded after they were found to be without a permit. Ten drivers at the roadblock were arrested after being caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
