Kenya National Assembly Deliberates on Gachagua’s Impeachment
Kenya’s National Assembly has convened to debate a special motion aimed at the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The motion, sponsored by Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse, outlines 11 serious allegations against Gachagua, which, if proven, could lead to his removal from office.
The impeachment motion, which had been formally presented to the House by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula last week, accuses Gachagua of various offenses, including inciting violent protests, engaging in corrupt practices, and promoting tribal divisions in the country's politics.
The grounds for impeachment, according to the motion, are diverse and serious in nature. Among the key accusations are: Gachagua’s alleged involvement in violent protests three months ago, raising concerns over his conduct in matters of public order; accusations of engaging in corrupt activities, with claims linking Gachagua to a network of 20 companies allegedly involved in economic crimes against the state; undermining President William Ruto’s policies and Cabinet decisions, described as gross misconduct and insubordination; and fostering tribalism, deepening political divisions across Kenya, creating tension within the country.
According to the National Assembly Order Paper, Mwengi Mutuse will take at least one hour to present the case for Gachagua’s impeachment. He is expected to provide evidence supporting the 11 charges. After Mwengi’s presentation, Deputy President Gachagua will be given the floor to defend himself against the accusations, likely addressing each allegation in detail.
For the impeachment to proceed, only one of the 11 charges needs to be proven true. If the motion passes, it will be a significant development in Kenya’s political landscape, marking the first impeachment of a sitting deputy president under the current constitution. However, the impeachment process is bound to be highly charged, with Gachagua and his supporters expected to mount a strong defense, arguing that the motion is politically motivated and lacks substantial evidence.
The impeachment motion has sparked widespread debate within Kenya and beyond, with many viewing it as a test of Kenya's democratic institutions and the balance of power between the executive and legislative branches. If Gachagua is successfully impeached, it could have major implications for President Ruto's administration. However, if Gachagua survives the vote, it may strengthen his political standing within the government. The unfolding debate is a critical moment in Kenya’s political history.
