In a significant development for African football, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has partnered with Kaizer Chiefs Football Club to launch the annual Toyota Cup. This groundbreaking pre-season competition will feature South Africa’s largest football brand, Kaizer Chiefs, clashing with top football clubs from across the continent over the next three years.

The inaugural edition of the Toyota Cup is set to take place at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on Sunday, July 28, at 15:00. Kaizer Chiefs, affectionately known as the Mighty Amakhosi, will face Tanzania’s most successful football team, Young Africans Sports Club (Yanga), in a match that promises to be a vibrant celebration of African football talent.

Ahead of the main event, fans in the City of Roses will be treated to a nostalgic curtain-raiser match between legends of Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic at 12:30. This legends’ match, alongside the primary clash between Amakhosi and Yanga, will honor the late Ntate Petrus Molemela, Life President of Bloemfontein Celtic, and celebrate the football-loving community of Mangaung.

In addition to the football action, fans can look forward to live performances by renowned artists and an exciting prize giveaway. Toyota has announced that one lucky fan will drive away in a brand-new Toyota Corolla Cross XI CVT worth over R400,000. To enter, fans need to purchase a Toyota Cup match ticket from any TicketPro outlet and send an SMS with their details and ticket number to 48952. Each SMS entry costs R1.50.

Leon Theron, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at TSAM, highlighted the significance of the Toyota Cup in strengthening the brand’s connection with its customers. “This unique sponsorship property underscores our commitment to our customers, who have shown immense loyalty to the Toyota brand. The innovative nature of the Toyota Cup allows us to engage with our customers in South Africa and across the continent. We look forward to a memorable 2024 Toyota Cup,” Theron said.

Jessica Motaung, Marketing and Commercial Director of Kaizer Chiefs, emphasized the alignment of the Toyota Cup with the club’s strategic goals. “Through our partnership with Toyota, we are excited to launch this groundbreaking initiative. The Kaizer Chiefs brand has a rich history in South African football, and the Toyota Cup allows us to further enhance our presence on the continent. We are excited to work with Yanga to achieve our shared goal of promoting African football,” Motaung stated.

Hersi Ally Said, President of Young Africans SC, expressed gratitude for the invitation to participate in the Toyota Cup. “We are delighted to continue our relationship with Kaizer Chiefs, which began last year with the Wiki Ya Mwananchi exhibition match. We promise to deliver a competitive match that will prepare us for the new season,” Said commented.

Both Said and Motaung hold key positions in CAF’s African Club Association (ACA) as President and Vice President, respectively. The Toyota Cup exemplifies the importance of collaboration among African clubs to grow club football, a primary objective of the ACA.

Tickets for the first-ever Toyota Cup are now available at TicketPro outlets across South Africa, starting at R40. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets early to avoid disappointment.

With the Toyota Cup, African football fans can look forward to a thrilling new chapter in the continent’s sporting narrative, filled with competition, camaraderie, and celebration.
