Over the weekend, a series of fires in South Africa's Cape Town region caused devastation, killing two people and displacing almost 2,000 others. According to emergency services comments issued on Sunday, three different incidents happened, killing two people and left hundreds homeless.

The flames, which started on Saturday evening and early Sunday morning, destroyed hundreds of shacks in informal settlements around the region. Jermaine Carelse, a spokeswoman for Cape Town's fire and rescue services, said that one adult male and female died from burn injuries in one of the settlements.
The most severe fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, blazing more than 150 shacks and displacing over 1,000 people in the Mfuleni settlement, around 30 kilometers southeast of Cape Town. Authorities are currently examining the cause of the fire, as Carelse stated.

Unfortunately, shack fires are a common occurrence in South Africa, posing a persistent threat to the destitute people of informal communities near major urban centers around the country. According to housing ministry figures, 12.3% of South Africans live in such improvised homes as of 2022.
Even three decades after apartheid ended, land ownership and housing policies remain difficult concerns in the country's political scene, especially with the forthcoming May 29 elections.

In response to the situation, the South African Muslim charity Gift of the Givers has mobilized humanitarian aid efforts, offering vital assistance to those affected in all three areas, including hot meals, clean drinking water, blankets, beds, and infant care supplies. While several people are being treated for injuries, one person is still missing. Community halls are being prepared to house the displaced people.
