Boko Haram Threatens to Poison Water Sources in Far North Cameroon
The Prefect of the Logone and Chari Department, in the Far North region of Cameroon, has issued an urgent alert concerning a project to poison water points by the terrorist followers of the Boko Haram sect. According to the website Telé Asu, this threat, targeting local populations, has been confirmed by consistent information recently received.
In a correspondence letter dated July 10, 2024, addressed to the sub-prefects of the ten districts that make up Logone and Chari, the Prefect, FOMBELE Mathias TAYEM, urged local authorities to take all necessary measures to counter this malevolent project as he emphasized the importance of raising awareness among traditional leaders and members of the vigilance committees within the concerned administrative districts.
The objective, as reported by the website, is to secure open wells and public water supply points to protect the populations. This directive from the prefect highlights the severity of the threat posed by Boko Haram in this region of Cameroon, where potable water infrastructure is already limited and crucial for the survival of local communities. Thus, preventing the poisoning of these water sources is a top priority for the authorities. The Prefect also asked the sub-prefects to report back on the measures taken to address this threat. This alert serves as a reminder of the persistent terrorist threat in the Far North region of Cameroon and the need for increased vigilance by all parties.
