Tragic Fire Claims Lives of Mother, Daughter, and Grandchild in Deliberate Arson Attack

East London, Mdantsane Nu1 , 28 April 2025 A community is in mourning after a horrific shack fire claimed the lives of three family members in what authorities are investigating as a deliberate act of arson.

Ntombizanele Mzendana, her daughter Kholosa Mzendana, and granddaughter Akhanani perished in the early hours of the morning when their home was engulfed in flames. According to preliminary reports, the fire was allegedly set by Kholosa’s boyfriend also the father of the young child following a domestic dispute. In a chilling turn, he is believed to have used heavy-gauge wire to secure the entrance, trapping the victims inside.

Neighbours were awakened by the screams of the victims and rushed to the scene in a desperate attempt to help. However, their efforts were in vain, as the heat from the blaze and the reinforced door made it impossible to gain access in time.

The suspect has since surrendered himself to police, and an investigation is currently underway. No formal charges have been announced at this time.

Outrage over the brutal loss has sparked calls for justice. A community-led march is scheduled for 8:00 AM today, proceeding to the local police station, where residents plan to open a case and demand accountability.
