The arrest of the rioters was authorized in the court
The Durban High Court has authorized the arrest of two men who are among the suspects in the case of the July 2021 riots.
These two men, Mr. Jabulani Cele and Mr. Blessing Sibusiso Gwala, are the ones who have been authorized to be arrested because they did not attend court.
Judge Sophia Steyn was the one who said that the two should be arrested for their actions.
These men are among the 60 suspects arrested for rioting. It has also been revealed that suspect number 35 in this case, Mr. Fikile Majozi, is no longer alive.
This was disclosed by the Chief Prosecutor Mr. Mahen Naidu.
"In my hand I have a certificate confirming that Mr. Fikile Majozi is indeed gone."
The State believes that the root of this scandal was the crying of Sigonyela's rings by the then president of the country, Jacob Zuma.
He believes that the suspects failed to accept this and started the violence.
The 12 suspects who were given the right to access government lawyers were able to do so.
It is understood that there are five others who were denied access to lawyers for various reasons.
Among them is that they did not give full details about themselves. What was noticed was that the suspects seemed to be happy even when their names were called.
The tenth suspect, Malibongwe Kubheka, told the court that he will no longer pay but will use a government lawyer.
This case has been going on for three years. Every time it returns to court, the problems of poor communication between the accused and the lawyers become more prominent.
In the past, there were suspects who complained and told Judge Steyn that there were lawyers they had paid but they did not appear in court.
The case was adjourned to December 10.
