A man suspected of attacking officers with whom he had a dispute has been shot dead by police inside Hluhluwe police station.

It is alleged that Mr Mpendulo Mkhize from Msolo, Hluhluwe, stormed the police station in the area armed with his own gun, surrounded the officers inside, and attempted to shoot them.

A source within the police station, said that the deceased was only attacking officers, and had  a scuffle with them while working outside, but it was a passing incident, and he would follow them to the station armed with a gun.

The source revealed that the deceased had a dispute with officers outside the station, and shot one of them. He says that the problem was eventually resolved, but he continued to follow them inside the station.

“The police officers, who were on duty outside, encountered the deceased and when they stopped him, an argument broke out. He got up and fought with them. One of the off-duty officers  intervened.

“The deceased continued to fight, eventually hitting one of the two officers who were in the van. The officers eventually left, left him there, and returned to the station, but the deceased followed them, continuing to fight them.

“He arrived at the station in his Toyota Corolla, surrounded the police vehicle and got out with a gun in his hand. When he got out of the car, he followed the officers while they continued to fight them.

“He even went inside where there were other officers, intending to finish them off, telling them to come outside to end their argument.

“It is said that the deceased then loaded his gun and pointed it at the officers, who wasted no time, shot him in the face and died at the station,” the source said.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Capt Ntathu Ndlovu confirmed the incident, saying the cause of the incident was still under investigation.
