Authorities Investigate Yakhe Kwinana’s Alleged Role in Taxi Violence and Extortion

Yakhe Kwinana, a 60-year-old Chartered Accountant and former board member of South African Airways (SAA), has been arrested and is facing multiple charges related to taxi violence and extortion in East London, Eastern Cape.
The allegations against Kwinana include claims that she threatened victims while accompanied by armed individuals and extorted money from them. Additionally, properties belonging to her alleged victims were reportedly demolished on her instructions.
Kwinana was previously implicated in the Zondo Commission Report, which investigated allegations of state capture, corruption, and fraud in the public sector. The report raised concerns about her competency as a Chartered Accountant and suggested she may have received improper payments.
Following these findings, Kwinana was removed from the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and fined R6.1 million. She was also barred from practicing as a Chartered Accountant.
The latest charges against Kwinana have drawn further public scrutiny. Reports suggest that her involvement in the taxi industry is linked to allegations of violence, intimidation, and extortion.
As investigations continue, questions remain about how the case will unfold. Authorities are expected to present further evidence in court as legal proceedings progress.
