Walter Sisulu University Distances Itself from Fatal Shooting Victim

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) has confirmed that the individual fatally shot on its Mthatha campus earlier today is not a registered student at the institution.

According to university spokesperson Yonela Tukwayo, the fatal shooting occurred during a violent protest over service delivery issues, primarily the ongoing water shortages affecting student residences.

The unrest escalated when protesting students reportedly targeted the residence of a university staff member, setting a car on fire and injuring the staff member’s wife. In the midst of the chaos, a residence manager allegedly discharged a firearm, injuring three people, one of whom died from their wounds.

The South African Police Service has launched an investigation into the incident, but no arrests have been made so far. University officials are working with authorities to establish the identity of the deceased and determine their connection to the campus community.

WSU management has strongly condemned the violence and affirmed its commitment to cooperating with law enforcement to bring stability to the campus.
