Government Converts State Buildings into Shelters for GBV Survivors

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) has handed over five unused state-owned buildings in Waterkloof, Pretoria, to the Gauteng Department of Social Development to serve as shelters for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV).
This initiative forms part of a broader national effort to combat GBV and provide meaningful support to affected individuals. The DPWI will oversee the maintenance and repairs of the buildings, while the Gauteng Department of Social Development will manage the shelters and offer empowerment programs. These include psychosocial support, healthcare, and legal services tailored to help women rebuild their lives.
Government's Ongoing Commitment to Fighting GBV
The handover is one of several steps taken by the government to respond to the GBV crisis in South Africa. The DPWI has committed 12 properties to this cause—six in Gauteng and six in the Western Cape—demonstrating a long-term dedication to creating safe spaces for survivors and delivering the necessary services to support their recovery.
