The South African music industry is mourning the loss of Yolanda “Yallunder” Nyembezi, a talented Afro-soul singer whose influence continues to be celebrated. The 30-year-old artist, originally from Bizana in the Eastern Cape, passed away on March 13 at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital after months of illness.

A heartfelt memorial service was held on March 19 at Cosmo City Multi-Purpose Community Centre in Johannesburg, where friends, family, and industry peers gathered to honor her life and career.

Music icons such as Oskido, Mnqobi Yazo, and Sjava—who played a pivotal role in her discovery—attended the service to pay their respects. Sjava, who introduced Yallunder to the industry, expressed deep sorrow at losing someone he considered family.

Reflecting on their working relationship, Oskido recalled his admiration for her dedication and artistry. “When she arrived at the studio, I liked her way of working. She told me Sjava had discovered her, and even though she wasn’t signed to our label, we became family,” he said.

He also revealed that Yallunder had been struggling financially while battling her illness. “I asked her if she had consulted a doctor, and she said no. When I asked why, she said she didn’t have money. I then called my sister, who helped her see our family doctor. The doctor discovered it was serious, and she was admitted to a Johannesburg hospital. I used to check in on her, and she always said she was alright—until we heard she was no more,” he shared.

Musician Mnqobi Yazo recounted how he first discovered Yallunder when she posted covers of songs by Sjava and Black Coffee on social media. Her distinctive voice and raw talent quickly gained recognition, leading to collaborations with some of the industry's biggest names.

Despite facing health challenges, Yallunder remained dedicated to her craft. “Even though she was going through a lot, she didn’t want to talk about it. I knew she wasn’t well, but she never let it affect her music,” Oskido added.

The cause of her death has not yet been disclosed, but her legacy endures through the music she left behind.

His funeral service was held at Akasia Hall in Pretoria, where family, friends, and notable figures came together to honor his remarkable life and legacy.

Can Women For Change Stop Chris Brown From Performing?
The Debate Over His 2024 South African Concert

Chris Brown is once again at the center of controversy, this time in South Africa, as the feminist group Women For Change calls for the cancellation of his concert in Johannesburg, scheduled for 14 December 2024. The concert has already sold out, but the timing of the event, which falls just after the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), has prompted a strong public response from advocates for women's rights, particularly those involved in fighting gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide.

Women For Change’s petition has made waves, arguing that allowing Chris Brown, an artist with a notorious history of violence against women, to perform in a country grappling with one of the highest GBV rates globally is not only insensitive but also dangerous. The group, in its petition, stated:

“His concert is scheduled just days after the global commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, making this event a direct insult to the millions of women and girls affected by violence in South Africa and worldwide.”

The petition directly references Chris Brown's 2009 conviction for assaulting his then-girlfriend, pop star Rihanna, as well as subsequent accusations of violence involving other women. Women For Change questions how the Department of Home Affairs could have granted a visa to Brown, given his documented history of abuse, and is urging the South African government, concert promoters, and sponsors to revoke it.

The petition draws attention to Chris Brown’s troubled history with women, starting with the assault on Rihanna. Despite being convicted for the crime and later apologizing, Brown has continued to face accusations of violent behavior, often overshadowing his musical career. His history of alleged violence is once again highlighted with the upcoming release of the documentary Chris Brown: A History of Violence, which will air in October.

This track record has led Women For Change and their supporters to argue that hosting Brown, especially in a country dealing with its own GBV crisis, sends the wrong message. South Africa’s femicide rate is five times the global average, and daily, women and children are subjected to violence, trauma, and fear. For many, allowing someone with a history of abuse to take center stage is a blatant disregard for the ongoing struggle against GBV.

The debate around Chris Brown’s concert taps into broader discussions about cancel culture, free speech, and accountability. Some argue that Brown, having faced legal consequences for his actions, should not be continually punished by society and that barring him from performing infringes on his right to move forward with his career.

On the other hand, Women For Change and its supporters argue that platforms like these should not be provided to individuals who have a known history of harming women, especially in contexts where GBV is an acute crisis. They believe that his presence and performance glorify an abuser, reinforcing a culture of permissiveness towards violence against women. For them, this is not about cancel culture but about holding people with influence accountable and standing in solidarity with victims.

Legally, it is unlikely that Women For Change alone can prevent Chris Brown’s concert from going forward, as his visa has already been approved and tickets have sold out. Concert organizers, promoters, and sponsors would need to step in for any chance of cancellation, which would require immense public pressure. While Women For Change’s petition may influence public opinion, decisions around international performers generally hinge on commercial considerations rather than ethical concerns, unless significant social backlash or governmental intervention occurs.

However, Women For Change’s campaign may still have a significant impact. Even if the concert is not canceled, the petition brings attention to the larger issue of how societies deal with individuals who have histories of violence, particularly when they are given high-profile platforms. It forces both South Africa and the world to reflect on the contradictions of celebrating someone with Brown’s history, while simultaneously advocating for an end to violence against women.

The controversy surrounding Chris Brown's scheduled performance in South Africa is a potent reminder of the ongoing struggle between cultural celebration and social responsibility. While it remains to be seen whether Women For Change’s petition will be successful in canceling the concert, it is clear that the issue has reignited a necessary conversation about gender-based violence, accountability, and the power of public figures.

South Africa’s battle with GBV is far from over, and this debate touches on larger questions of who should be celebrated in public spaces and whether those with troubled pasts should be given platforms in countries where the wounds of violence against women are still raw and deep.

The Truth Behind the #RIPCartoonNetwork Trend

The hashtag #RIPCartoonNetwork has recently been trending on X, causing a wave of concern among fans about the future of the beloved network. In an industry marked by constant change, such news can quickly stir anxiety among movie and TV enthusiasts. But what is the reality behind this trend?

Contrary to the alarm, Cartoon Network is not shutting down. The network continues to operate, and there have been no recent layoffs to trigger the #RIPCartoonNetwork trend. Nonetheless, the network is facing some significant challenges. Both Cartoon Network and Warner Bros. have experienced difficulties following their merger with Discovery. Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. stock has seen a steep decline, plummeting from an all-time high of $24.88 post-merger to a recent low of $7.11.

CEO David Zaslav’s decisions have been met with widespread criticism, contributing to the conglomerate’s tarnished reputation. Controversial moves, such as renaming HBO Max to Max, removing content from the streaming platform, and canceling shows for tax benefits, have only fueled dissatisfaction and speculation among fans, driving the #RIPCartoonNetwork trend.

Despite these setbacks, Cartoon Network’s future is not in jeopardy. The network has a slate of new programming on the horizon, including “The Amazing World of Gumball: The Series” and spin-offs of popular shows like “Adventure Time,” “Regular Show,” and “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.” These upcoming projects underscore Cartoon Network’s dedication to innovation and maintaining its appeal to viewers.

While Cartoon Network has undoubtedly faced challenges due to post-pandemic recovery and merger-related adjustments, the network is far from shutting down. Although there is plenty of criticism regarding current management strategies, it is clear that Cartoon Network will continue to thrive for the foreseeable future. Fans can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that the network remains committed to delivering quality entertainment and adapting to the ever-changing media landscape.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has decided to drop all charges against the renowned television presenter and rapper, Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye. Maarohanye, who has been a prominent figure in the South African entertainment industry, was accused of rape, attempted murder, and assault, with the alleged incidents occurring between 2006 and 2009.

The allegations were brought to light in 2022 by four women, one of whom was Maarohanye's ex-girlfriend. These serious accusations had cast a shadow over his career, leading to significant public attention and legal scrutiny.

NPA spokesperson Phindile Mjonondwane provided clarity on the decision, stating that the charges were dropped due to the lack of reasonable prospects for a successful prosecution. "This decision follows careful consideration of the police case docket, the prosecutor's report and recommendations, coupled with information that was made available to the NPA through representations submitted by the defence to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)," Mjonondwane explained.

The decision to drop the charges suggests that after a thorough review of all available evidence and representations, the NPA concluded that the case would not likely succeed in court. This move has elicited mixed reactions from the public and various stakeholders, with some expressing relief for Maarohanye, while others remain concerned about the implications for the accusers.

Maarohanye, who had been maintaining his innocence throughout the legal proceedings, can now focus on rebuilding his personal and professional life without the burden of these serious allegations hanging over him. The NPA's decision underscores the importance of ensuring that legal actions are based on robust evidence to uphold the integrity of the justice system.

As the dust settles on this high-profile case, it remains a poignant reminder of the complexities involved in legal battles, particularly those that play out in the public eye. The NPA's thorough review process and ultimate decision highlight the critical balance between seeking justice and ensuring fair and evidence-based legal proceedings.
